Electroacoustic LayersJurica Jelic

The Croatian composer and soundartist Jurica Jelic created with Electroacoustic Layers a microtonal album for instruments and electronics which takes us to the very interesting subject of contemporary classic. Fascinating sounds from the first listening can be awaited. One can hear the joy of creation and Jelic sublime skills. The 6 tracks of Electroacoustic layers show the influence by fantastic composers like Giacinto Scelsi, Iannis Xenakis or Tristan Murail. The sound pieces are based on the mixolydian mode of a bagpipe tuning, with quatertone, which is a pitch halfway between the usual notes of a chromatic scale and the meantone 1/4 tuning, a variant of the Pythagorean tuning. The very special sonic journey leads off by a piece for viola, trombone and computer which is able to fascinate from the first minute. Piano, flute, celesta and tape intermitted with drones and hidden vocals mesmerize in Eaw 2. Marimba, cello and computer continue the rear to float to the epic melancholic sounds which were created by cello, horn , trombone and electronics. The gloomy atmosphere moves to allusively medivial feel of Eaw 5, an electroacoustic piece for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and tape. The album ends up with the fascinating string quartett embedded in the sounds of field recordings. Electroacoustic Layers is dedicated to Jurica’s late grandfather Nikola Jelic.
